This new report by the UK Policy Evidence Unit for University Commercialisation and Innovation (UCI) sets out in detail the reality of current UK university approaches to taking equity in spinouts to create an evidence baseline for policymakers and others seeking to investigate how to strengthen the UK research and innovation system to produce more ‘high-potential’ spinouts.
The report provides evidence on the levels of founding equity universities typically take in different types of spinouts and the reasoning behind their approaches. It explores how universities are investing to develop their support systems to help academic founders increase their venture’s technology and commercial readiness and attract investors. Further, it captures the range of barriers and issues faced when spinning out ventures to commercialise university research. Unsurprisingly these extend beyond issues over equity. We need to work together to tackle them.
